The piece in short

A Nain from Iran, measuring 248 × 357 cm. It covers approximately 8.85 m², or 8.1' × 11.7'. Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 5-7mm.

Size and placement

The rug is rectangular. At this size the rug defines the room rather than accenting it.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 400,000–499,999 knots/m². At this density even small-scale motifs can be worked out cleanly.
